about

This album is dedicated to Benoit Mandelbrot and celebrates the beauty of all things fractal. I created the cover of this album using the most excellent free software package, Mandelbrot Explorer. I spent quite a lot of time searching and zooming through Mandelbrot space; and then adjusting the color scheme to get just the right image for this album cover.

The Mandelbrot set is the set of values of c in the complex plane for which the orbit of 0 under iteration of the complex quadratic polynomial Z(n+1) = Z(n)**2 + c remains bounded. That is, a complex number c is part of the Mandelbrot set if, when starting with z(0) = 0 and applying the iteration repeatedly, the absolute value of z(n) remains bounded however large n gets.

Benoit B. Mandelbrot (20 November 1924 – 14 October 2010) was a Polish-born, French and American mathematician, noted for developing a "theory of roughness" in nature and the field of fractal geometry to help prove it, which included coining the word "fractal". He later discovered the Mandelbrot set of intricate, never-ending fractal shapes, named in his honor. I have always loved and been fascinated with fractal images for their infinite variation and beauty. I once worked on a project in my former existence where I wrote software to calculate the fractal dimension of images of carbonaceous aerosol particles taken with an electron microscope. The fractal dimension was used to identify what combustion source of produced these particles—simply amazing!
